Please be advised that our department’s Turkish Language program is first and foremost a university program. As such, the primary goal of the courses therein is to impart upon students a deeper academic knowledge of the structure and usage of the Turkish language. While all courses contain an element of immersion aimed at increasing students' overall level of fluency in Turkish, courses bearing the code TKF (aimed at international students) are intentionally grammar-centered. Even where complicated terminology is kept to a minimum in order to facilitate comprehension, grammar instruction is explicit, and exercises are aimed at practicing grammar in an albeit naturalistic fashion. More specifically, though common words and phrases are part of the curriculum, introductory level courses should not be viewed as "survival Turkish", but as an introduction to the structure of the language. Students are expected to make the most of their surroundings by practicing Turkish as much as possible with their friends and neighbors around Istanbul.
