Although Department of Turkish Language and Literature offers only one degree, it offers two doctorate programs: Old Turkish Literature and New Turkish Literature. Both programs consist of courses equal to 25/28 credits and a doctorate thesis.

 

Specialty Elective/Elective Courses

16 credits of 25/28 credits which are expected from students to complete in doctorate programs are chosen by the students among the specialty electives opened by the department according to their own area of expertise. 9/12 credits are completed with the electives from the other departments of social sciences. Doctorate courses have to be completed in four years at most.

 

Remedial Courses

Students to be accepted for doctorate program are expected to have had their undergraduate or graduate education in literature. Students are asked to take preliminary preparation courses for one year if necessary.

 

Proficiency

Doctorate students have to take the Proficiency exam until the end of the fifth semester at the latest. Student who fail in the Proficiency exam have to take the exam again in the following semester. Students who fail in that exam again are dismissed from the doctorate program.

 

Thesis

Students who pass the Proficiency exam will register for thesis.

Thesis Proposal Presentation
Doctorate students who pass the Proficiency have to present their thesisproposals to thesis follow up committee at the beginning of the sixth semester. Thesis proposal should be submitted to thesis commissionfifteen days prior to the thesis commission meeting in print-out form. Students whose thesis proposals are rejected have to submit a new thesis proposal within 3 months. Students whose thesis proposal is rejected for the second time are dismissed from the doctorate program. (Thesis follow up committee have to announce whether thesis proposal has been approved or not with a written record within 3 days after the meeting.) 
Doctorate thesis proposals should be prepared in this form: 4500-6000 words, New Times Roman Font, 12 font size, double spaced, aligned to left, including page numbers and headers, footnotes and bibliography written according to Chicago Manual 15th edition. Text samples will be provided.

Thesis Duration
Thesis duration begins in the 6th semester. Doctorate students are expected to defend their dissertations after the end of 8th semester. Moreover, if thesis jury considers necessary, a total of a 4 semester additional time can be granted as of the end of the 8th semester with a re-evaluation every semester. However, students should have completed most of their dissertations and have submitted them to the jury in order to request for additional time at the end of the 8th semester.

Thesis advisor will be determined by department and students.

Thesis Jury
Thesis Jury is made up of the 3 person follow up committee and a total of 5 persons one from another university.

Thesis Follow Up Committee
Thesis follow up committee is formed within one month, for the students who have passed the Proficiency exam. (at the end of 5th semester) Thesis follow up committee meets twice an academic year (once every semester) to assess progress reports of submitted by students. In this report, the student is expected to summarize what he achieved in the thesis so far and presents the next semester’s work plan. The committee evaluates thesis studies as successful or failing according to reports. Two consecutive failures or a total of three failures cause the student to be dismissed from the program.

Thesis Follow Up Report
Thesis follow up committee assembles at the end of the sixth semester. Students present their reports to this body showing the progress of thesis dissertations every six months. Reports to be presented to thesis follow up committee have to be delivered to committee members 15 days prior to the meeting. Before presenting to follow up committee, a doctorate thesis student has to submit at least 50 pages of his/her dissertations his/her advisor.

Thesis Delivery
After the advisor checks the whole thesis, dissertations have to be submitted to the Jury 1 month prior to the defense date. Following the approval of the defense, students have to submit three bound copies of their dissertations prepared according to the format indicated by Social Sciences Institute to the Institute within one month.
